Yes, that's all well and good, but the Mekons were capable of much, much more.. and that, my friend implies an irony which may not be evident on a cursory listening .. check out their first album and you'll begin to understand what i mean...

The mythology of punk has it that punk stripped rock 'n' roll down to its long-forgotten core. If there's any truth to that thesis, this slab of primal primitivism--of pop music stripped of musicianship, melody, manners, meaning, and charm--is the apotheosis of punk. Monkeys bashing coconuts together have crafted more complex melodies, and winos holding forth of street corners have delivered more coherent rants. It all makes me wonder if well-worn stories about post-punk's origins are all wrong. Post-punk, so the story goes, emerged when musicians with artier instincts, greater chops, and more pretension took off in various punk-inspired directions. The post-punks came to rebuild what punk had torn down--only now with the freedom punk's ground-clearing allowed them. But maybe not. Maybe post-punk developed out of even greater incompetence. Punks could at least bash out their three chords within the strictures of two- or three-minute pop songs; the Mekons couldn't even manage that.
