The Mekons were in search of something on side one. Now they've found it. There they couldn't get their disparate influences (post-punk, blues rock, country, folk) to coalesce into a sound of their own, and they ended up with a series of tracks exploring different genres. But the joyous, exuberant three-song suite that opens the second side, and which starts right here, is where they pull it all together and forge a distinctive sound from their roots-rock influences. It's a hoot, and one helluva racket: pounding, incessant drumbeats; crazy blues and country guitar licks; fiddling spread on top; and energy, energy, energy. They're brimming with newfound confidence, and they're ready to face the political and romantic turmoil that haunts the album. Side one left us in the dead of night; side two pushes toward daybreak. These songs won't solve their problems (that's what beer and revolution are for)--but they may strengthen our resolve to find a way forward.
