I heard the Jam's version first, in my teens, so I may be biased, but I'm also a fan of late-60s Kinks. and probably play Face To Face more often that All Mod Cons. Now that I've heard 4 different Kinks versions, I still find the Jam's faster, somewhat staccato performance tighter and more intense. It also conveys the mood of envy and (class?) resentment without ironic distance -- Davies' version may be mocking the self-hating protagonist, or at least condescending toward the character, but Weller/Fox (I think both sing on here) seem to relate entirely. That's how I hear it anyway. Think I'll play some Jam albums now.

My name is David Watts and though at first I took great offense at this song, I have since reformed my ways. It took the Jam to set me straight [the kinks didn't take ha ha].

I'm not too familiar with The Kinks' version, but I do adore this cover. Melodic, yes, but also brusque and with a great kick.

I sort of like the original, but this greatly surpasses it. And yes, we all know a David Watts, don't we?
