Hmm... well, I've been feeling the urge to listen to this one a lot lately. I still stand by my statements that the album is a bit lacking in the secondary influences that make the great Fall albums great. The basic elements of The Fall are Rockabilly, 60s Garage Rock (i.e. the type of song you hear on Nuggets compilations), weird avant-garde poetry/sci-fi/horror lyrics, Krautrock, Electronic music and strange/lo-fi/noisy production choices. This album basically only features Rockabilly/Garage Rock and strange production choices. Now, if you crank it loud, it sounds great and it's a lot of fun because almost everything is straight-forward and rocking despite the presence of some odd noises from time to time. So it's plenty good, the guitar tone is pleasingly tough, the amateurish background vocals are charming, the drums are nice and crisp and MES is energetic but doesn't contribute much in the way of great lyrics. Good Fall but nothing more.

This only seems bad in the wake of the great Levitate -> Marshall Suite -> Unutterable run the Fall (well, Mark, since the band went through a lot of lineup changes in that span) had just come off. It's perfectly fine taken on its own merits, though it's certainly not one of the better Fall albums. The "problem" here is that the songwriting isn't as interesting as on the last few that came before it; sure, the production choices are among the most interesting/fucked up/bizarre that one could hope for, but the songs themselves are essentially pretty basic garage rockers. If you can handle that (that is, basic, catchy garage rockers married to strange production) you'll like this and most other Fall albums, because that's been a Fall trademark for a while, it's just that most of their other albums include other influences and ideas beyond those.

One of the great Fall myths is that this album is shit. It's not, it's quite good.

The first four tracks are ace, Gotta See Jane is nice and the Reprise track is quite awesome. But the rest is banal.

I can't get over the ..'are missing' rather than '..our missing' - sad but true. I'd give money to rename it... Well a couple of quid maybe...
