Charlie Don't Surf is a song from the 1980 triple album "Sandinista!" by The Clash. Its title is taken from a famous line in the film Apocalypse Now, spoken by Robert Duvall's Colonel Kilgore character. ("Charlie" was U.S. military slang for "Vietcong, Vietcong soldier," probably suggested by Victor Charlie, military communication code for 'V.C.')
In the film, Kilgore, from his helicopter, sees excellent waves for surfing and decides, over some worried protestations from his men, to invade the beach-head the next morning. He utters the immortal phrase in response to one of his men, who says 'But Colonel, that's Charlie's beach!'
