One of my favorite albums EVER made. Literally only 2 songs that I skip, "Mensforth Hill" (though sometimes i listen to it) and "career opportunities". Even those songs I appreciate though in context. The clash doing every genres and not giving a fuck about sales or record length is the most punk thing imaginable. Its the very ethos of punk in fact. I also believe their self titled and london calling are masterpieces of course and rope, combat rock are underrated. Sandinista just holds a special place in my heart.

The highs on this album are easily up there with London Calling. But man, this album really is just too long. It's hard to fully enjoy this album as much as LC. All the dub versions of songs are just unnecessary, even though they're not poorly made. Still rank this as the second best Clash album behind LC obviously because I care most about the highs.

that's mostly how i feel about this album, and would also rank it second only to London Calling. But I will in addition to that always respect the sheer uncompromising boldness of following up your breakthrough album with a triple album stacked with songs that are all over the place in terms of genre and are way out there at times but still feel as a whole. It's almost like the most punk thing they ever did, not giving a f*ck about what critics or fans might think of it but just put everything they ever wanted to try out musically on one record and just go with it.

After years of listening to this album, I still don't know how I feel about it. I love the experimentation with all the different styles and the odd bits like Sillicone Sapphire and all the dub influences but I feel like everything they did on this was filtered down into the superior Combat Rock to much better effect. Don't know if it was just some bits that felt like filler or awkward sequence of tracks but I always feel like I'm listening to a collection of ep's and singles when listened from beginning to end. Still, this album contains some of the Clashes finest moments (Police On My Back, The Call Up, Magnificent Seven, Junco Partner, Washington Bullets and a few others). No other band like The Clash.

Fascinating but frustrating album. Sandinista has some my favorite Clash songs, like "Police on My Back" and especially "Washington Bullets" but there is no need to include dub versions of no less than 5 songs! Especially when they left off "Bankrobber" which was recorded during the Sandinista sessions and happens to be one of their best (dub) songs.

@MrJunior: My sentiments exactly. Listening to it right now, and I'm amazed how each track is so different, yet the fluidity is so amazing. This is one of the greatest albums in the history of popular music, right up there with The White Album, Electric Lady land, Pet Sounds, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and all the other albums that transcended a particular genre or genres. I used to have lukewarm feelings about Sandinista!, but after a dozen or so listens, I now truly appreciate the magnitude of it. RIP to the only band that mattered.

I still consider Combat Rock my favorite (well, truth be told, my favorite Clash album of any kind is the bootleg "Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg"), but this is the album that proves that there was nothing they couldn't do when the band was still all together. The people who get all hung up on the "coulda been a great single album with some editing" miss the obvious point; they clearly had no interest in delivering a concise album, so if you want a 40- or 50-minute then you would have them betray the artistic vision they had for their album. Sure it's long as hell, but it serves as sort of a musical encyclopedia and is one of the most special albums of all time. Would you have wanted Kerouac to take a carving knife to On the Road? Joyce to do the same to Finnegans Wake? Or to use an example that's a little more pertinent to The Clash, Burroughs to "tighten up" Naked Lunch? The scope of the album is its purpose; take that away and it's just a (great) normal rock record.

While the first three albums by Clash show that they're the only band that matters, this album show that they're the band that can transform to every matter.

the clash-equivalent to the beatles' "white album" - too many filler tracks cluttering the sides so you can have a double/triple LP.. lose all the worthless stuff and you might have a great album. in another words: 75% of this ain't my cup of tee or is obvious lazy filler. then again, there is some neat stuff here.

I have always seen Sandinista! as an extreme version of the concept behind London Calling. You can listen to both discs of LC separately, because they are good enough to stand at their own. But together, they form a long epic journey, and one of the greatest albums ever. The bad part of Sandinista! is that many tracks take some time to start to dig them. But at the end, every song is needed to feel the real experience. Anyway, there's something that surprise me, is that true that so many people see this as their worst? I think it's right up there with London Calling.

I retract my previous comment. I think this album is just a bit overwhelming to take on everything in one go. Especially as it features so many different genres, as well as the diversity of the lyrics with a lot of world politics mentioned, It's probably best to take this as 3 (great) albums. The fact that this (for most people) would come down to their worst album really says a lot about the importance of The Clash in music and what a great band they are.

Disc 1 > Disc 2 in my opinion. Not saying there aren't some really good tracks on disc 2... Great album!

In some ways their best album, I think. Certainly many of the songs on here match up favorably with anything else they did and the sheer sprawl of the record is amazing. Not one I sit down and listen to every day but when I do listen to it front to back it blows me away.

I got this album three months ago and just now started listen to it, simply because it's too long. That being said, it's fucking perfect. The Clash are the greatest Punk Rock band, but they're so much more than that, too.

Too good an album for the average punker retard. This one, LC, the Cost of Living EP and the first one, plus "Safe European Home" from GEER are Clash essentials.
