This song: cool, deep, meaningful social commentary. Also this song: you didn't give your child enough fun! Bummer! She's leaving home after "living alone" for so many years but the one thing she was missing was fun...

I think that line is said from the perspective of the parents (John). The narrator (Paul) makes it clear that she felt lonely while under the hood of their parents, to the point of leaving them. The fact that she left a letter for them is also a pointer to the fact that it wasn't such a frivolous act as it's sang on the ending. At the end of the day, the parents were so clueless about their behavior that the only explanation for their daughter escaping was that she didn' t had "fun", while it's clear that it was something deeper than that.

Holy cow, what a beautiful, criminally underrated song. That final "She's leaving home, byeee byeeee..." gives me goosebumps every time

This song always use to bug me. Don't know what it was, it just wasn't one of my favorites. But in recent years it has been growing on me. Now I wonder if my opinion on The Long and Winding Road will ever change. Not likely.

I'm so confused as to what is the right mix of this song. The mono and stereo versions have way different pitch. As someone who grew up with the stereo version the mono version sounds way sped up - I wonder what is the original pitch. I know the mono mixes were the priority, so maybe the stereo version was slowed down?

Song was recorded in key of E .The Beatles decided to change the pitch to F in the Mono mix, which they did themselves. The stereo mix wasn't done by the Beatles (it's a rather lazy mix as most people didn't listen to stereo back then), the engineers were not aware of the decision and left it in the original key of E. The new 2017 stereo mix done by Giles Martin changed the key to F again, like the Beatles originally decided in the mix.

Very interesting, thanks a lot! I wonder why they did that, why not just record the song again in F? It does sound fine sped up though, so why bother. I wonder what opted them to speed it up, I really like the original key of E.

According to Wikipedia, apparently they sped it up 'to make Paul sound younger'. Which means simply re-recording it wouldn't have done the trick. And of course there's the logistic inconvinience of hiring the whole orchestra and recording the song again, as opposed to using the existing recording

It's not like you can't just mix two stereo channels together and make it mono again anyway.

I'm glad to know i'm not the only one who thinks the Mono version sounds so much better than the Stereo version
