Whoa, man, that’s some heavy shit about the Beatles. I mean, fuck, it’s like they were riding high and then hit this gnarly wall of reality, huh? You can definitely feel the fucking pressure cooker they were in, just boiling over with tunes that bleed with that raw, fucked up emotion. Lennon was like a damned raw nerve, and you can hear that pain in his voice, that bitter edge that cuts right through the bullshit. But you know, it’s not all fucking doom and gloom. “Eight Days a Week” is like a ray of goddamn sunshine through a storm cloud of fucks given. And those covers, shit, they might seem like a step back, but they also show where these guys came from, you know? They’re paying homage to the roots that got their asses on the map. And fuck, that Dylan influence? It’s like Lennon was sticking his hand into the soul of music and pulling out something fucking real, something that wasn’t just about shaking your ass and screaming girls. It was about the gritty shit, the real-life f

i'm going through the beatles' discography with a fine-tooth comb for the first time (to the point of comparing pressings, going through all the label-butchered releases in different markets, etc). i feel like i might be crazy and this might be the best LP they released up to this point?

there's just an overall warmth and ease to the songs and performances that's pretty rare...it's the best kind of burnout album. low stakes, undemanding, comfortable

Too many covers on this one to beat A Hard Day's Night in my opinion. Still a fantastic album with great songs all round

well as a musician it's a far greater challenge to come up with your own song versus interpretating an already existing one. And then we're talking about The Beatles, who revolutionized pop music right because of being writers and performers at the same time, and A Hard Day's Night being a 100 % Lennon-McCartney masterpiece versus this one that more feels like they put in a few covers and medleys from their old live reperoire to fill up the record along with the great originals that are still on it. Not to say I don't like a good cover every now and then (in fact my favourite here is probably Words of Love) but they were clearly getting somewhat exhausted at the end of a long year of touring and making a movie.

i agree with that criterion as a means of assessing an artist, of course – that’s why brian wilson will always be better and more impressive than the beatles, he made pet sounds and all that other beautiful work essentially by himself (versus the beatle four + a much needed george martin) and against the countervailing force of essentially everyone he ever met (his bandmates/family, his abusive dumbass dad, his label). but when it comes to assessing the end product – the song, the album, the music – it’s irrelevant

I disagree, the end product is made by the ones who wrote the songs. John and Paul are two of the greatest songwriters of all time and also the most successful songwriting duo of all time, which makes their songs superior to many others including many if not all of the songs that they are covering here. This is why I prefer A Hard Day's Night over this album even if I do like both. It's really not that complicated, and also just my personal opinion.

Black sheep of the discography. This record is amazing. No Reply, I'm A Loser and I'll Follow the Sun are all top tier Beatles tracks.

George Harrison making love to that 12-string Rickenbacker. The Beatles' country album. Shame it's overlooked so much.

If any Beatles album can be said to be underrated -- which I believe they can, because as popular as The Beatles remain there are still tons and tons of people who have no awareness of this or any other Beatles album; this one remains pretty unloved by the overall Beatles fanbase -- this is one. It's a huge step forward for them, Lennon in particular, especially in terms of the subject matter of the songs. "No Reply," "I'm a Loser," etc., were not the typical "boy meets girl" songs they and their peers had been writing. Unfortunately, as on With the Beatles, the covers here are really crummy juxtaposed with the brilliant originals. It's also disappointing that after writing all the songs themselves on A Hard Day's Night they reverted to the "some originals/some covers" format. At any rate, this is far better than its reputation and is in my opinion really good.

i don't think words like worst, underrated or overrated apply to the beatles. this is a beatles' album, so you basically know what you're getting: great composition, even better execution, and some things that will make you lose your breath, even after hearing it a thousand times before.

If this is allocated to a group "The Beatles" how come it doesn't say "The Beatles for Sale" The group is "Beatles" the is used to mark a proper noun.
