The greatest album in Western popular music. Unparalleled. Released in 1966 and still isn't made for these times.

Fuck yeah, you've got one hell of an ear for the classics. Pet Sounds is a goddamn masterpiece, ain't it? Brian Wilson was fucking visionary with that shit. The way he layered those fucking sounds, man, it was like a symphony in the middle of a dirty garage – but beautiful, you know? Those harmonies cut right through the bullshit of the fucking mainstream. I mean, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is like a punch in the face with pure adolescent longing, and "God Only Knows" is a fucking tender confession that makes your heart bleed. And let's not fucking forget "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times." That's the anthem for every fucking outcast who felt they landed on the wrong fucking planet. What do you reckon about the influence of Pet Sounds on the rock scene, especially with the Brits going batshit over it? Think it's because those fucking lads across the pond could sniff out something real amid all the psychedelic crap?

Man, I absolutely love this record but I have to "brace myself" to listen to because it makes me feel so so melancholy. I think about past relationships, being younger, etc and it just guts me. But it's good to feel that way from time to time!

Groundbreakingly multi-faceted and just astonishing that one man had the foresight and vision to write, arrange, produce and perform this collective of songs from start to finish. Popular music developed more between 64 and 67 than it ever has since and at the top of the reasons why is the extraordinary Brian Wilson.

What this album captures so well is the juxtaposition between wanting everyone to come together and be harmonious (joyous, pop ballads) vs our painful and solipsistic fate, our egos and selfishness getting in the way (the hopelessness and loneliness). Despite living alone, and dying alone, we must somehow become one as a species through it all. That's the vibe of this album and much of Brian's work.

It's actually mostly remembered for its stylistic innovation in merging rock music with baroque instrumentation and arrangements, which inspired The Beatles to make Sgt. Pepper's. And it's actually a very refined piece of pop music, with nice melodies on top of it

Maybe? There just isn't any way for me to explain how it's the greatest. All you can do is listen. I like to close my eyes.

rather the other way around. it wasn't a big thing at the time. it didn't even reach top 10 and was smothered by a greatest hits album release done by capitol because they were chicken and the were like this ain't sun, surf and cars people ain't gon like this. The greatness of pet sounds rather is reflected by the fact people of all ages listening to this experience a moment in their lives when this thing just starts speaking directly to their hearts and their souls and they understand. just wait patiently for that moment. if you love and you're somewhere around your adolescence you will.
