Elliott Roberts on YouTube has a thoughtful, well-researched video about this album that puts it in context for people looking to understand how Love You fits into the Beach Boys' history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn-E3PAtZK8

there's some brilliant stuff on here, but it would've been *so* much better if you shaved off the first two tracks and started with "mona" (maybe moving "honkin'" to the track 1 slot, as well)...plus i'm sorry, i know it's about a child daughter, but there is just no reason for a middle-aged man to be singing "pat her on the butt" over and over with a twitch in his eye...despite what avowed pedo defenders like hybe and @petekropotkin want you to believe

will also add that if they had later re-cut "i bet he's nice" and "the night was so young" and gave them the LA sound on a double-sided single, it would've been their biggest hit of the 20 years between "barbara ann" and "kokomo." you can especially hear this potential in brian's "nice" piano demo where mike starts freaking out during the bridge

I always find it interesting to hear Mike being so supportive of Brian on those recordings, not that it mitigates all his other asshattery and treatment of Brian

it’s cool but i’m not convinced it would’ve hit. but yes i do love it for what it is, i just wish they re-recorded and repromoted it, that song in that style would’ve had much more artistic and commercial potential than the other home recording songs they later returned to

Do you see any potential with Let's Put Our Hearts Together? That's the one that gets played most by myself and I often wonder how well it could have done if donated to another artist (Glen Campbell and Linda Ronstadt 😏)

I love this, how unhinged the whole thing is, with Brian's constant voice cracks and naive/childish songwriting

so much love and innocence and honesty and beauty it's almost too much to handle sometimes... love you too Brian <3

definitely one of my favorite beach boys albums. Brian's music isn't as inventive as it used to be, but the tunes here are undeniably heartfelt and catchy and the entire thing sounds so remarkably odd.

Just listen to the freaking Moog basslines he plays in Johnny Carson between :32 and :36 in between the lines "Ed McMahon comes on and says 'Here's Johnny'." and "Every night at 11:30, he's so funny." It's so good it hurts.

This album blows my mind. The Moog bass lines that Brian plays for basically every song are incredible. Especially at certain parts in Mona and Johnny Carson. What a freaking genius. Also the 3-hit snare hits he does in several of the songs, particularly in Johnny Carson are so damn awesome. Such an incredible album. So overlooked.

Alright, so status update: I love side b of this album, and I even started learning how to play the songs. Right now I'm working on the first half. Johnny Carson and Honkin' Down the Highway are still rubbing me the wrong way, and Solar System is still weirding me out too much. I don't doubt that I will love and enjoy every second of this record soon!

Yeah! The second half is wonderful, and makes you appreciate the first. 'Let's Put Our Hearts Together' is devastating.

If it weren't for the heavy ass synths, this album wouldn't be so hard to swallow. I mean, I LOVE The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, and I'm really trying to like this album, but the overall sound of it kills me. Obviously, I love Good Time because that wasn't even made for this album. I dunno...I'll keep trying.

this album shows that, despite brian's illness he could write those melodies, that blows you away, lyrics are a bit childish in places, but that doesen't matter, great album.
