Love the sort of anything goes mentality on each song. Really makes for a very unique sound and atmosphere across the entire album.

Absolutely my favorite album of all time. Like said before, every track is amazing with my favorites being "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Rockin' Chair", "Jawbone" and "King Harvest". The melodies, lyrics, instrumentation, etc. are all amazing. Just a perfect, timeless and beautiful piece of work.

There isn't a single song on this album that could be classified as filler or in any way subpar. Every song is excellent. The playing is perfect across the board. It's just stunning in every way imaginable. I love several other records by The Band, but it's this one that cements them as a legendary group in my view.

If it weren't such a silly and impossible thing to determine, I would probably say that this is the best album I've ever heard. They were aiming to create an album of music "out of time" -- that is, music that is neither of its time nor of any other time. As a result, some of the recording, producing, engineering and mastering choices they made had the effect of making the record not so pristine sounding as, say, Stage Fright, which is an incredible sounding album. But beyond the technical choices the group made here, the songwriting and subject matter lends itself wonderfully to the goal of "timelessness." If you heard this album without knowing anything about its background or the people who made it, it would be impossible to pin down the time in which it was made, because in addition to not sounding like anything from 1969, it doesn't sound like anything from any other time period, either. But all this would be irrelevant if the songwriting weren't up to snuff, and it definitely is.

I love your defintion of timeless! I was having a debate with my dad about this, what makes a piece of music “timeless”. The Allmusic review on the Stooges first album (the only music source I like to read) said a similar thing about it https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-stooges-mw0000195830 Murmur by R.E.M., Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division & Rumours by Fleetwood Mac are some other albums I would consider “timeless”

I love that Stooges self-titled review! Makes me want to listen. I can definitely hear the timeless quality in the records you mention... Murmur in particular is such a beautifully strange record. I can imagine hearing that in 1983 and just not being able to tell ANYTHING about who made it, when it was made, etc. FM has a few records like that... I love them so much. Rumours of course, Tusk is just absolutely amazing, this behemoth filled with so many great songs in different styles ("Sisters of the Moon" being my favorite FM track and one of my favorite songs by anyone), then I just can't get enough of the Peter Green stuff. I could listen to "Albatross" all day

Different athmosphere if compared to Big Pink, but both are really good albums :)

V I'm sure Big Pink is phenomenal, but this is a masterpiece in its own right. Utterly timeless. Fell in love with the original vinyl. ; )
