The album lineup consists of frontwoman and lyricist Alissa White-Gluz on leading vocals, Danny Marino on guitars, Chris Kells on bass & backing vocals, and Simon McKay on drums & percussions. All tracks were written by the Agonist, except for “Swan Lake” by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Lullabies for the Dormant Mind guest features singer Youri Raymond on second track “...and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep"; violins by Mahogany Rush’s Avi Ludmer on closing track “Chlorpromazine”, and orchestrations by classical pianists Melina Soochan and Blackguard’s Jonathan Lefrancois-Leduc. Artwork was provided by Natalie Shau, while photography was shot by Georgios Sousa.
The band demonstrate a more diverse array of sound than their previous, debut Once Only Imagined (2007) and features a wide range of classical, jazz, opera, grindcore, thrash metal, gothic metal, power metal and black metal influences.
The Japanese version contains a cover for Dark Tranquillity's "Monochromatic Stains" as a bonus track. In 2009, the band released two video clips for tracks “…and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep” and "Thank You, Pain", respectively.
