Biography
Francisco Tenório Cerqueira Júnior, a.k.a. Tenorio Jr. (1943 - 1976), was a Brazilian pianist and arranger. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he became one of the most important Bossa nova musicians, and his piano can be heard in albums like Edson Machado’s “É Samba Novo” and Wanda Sá’s “Vagamente”.
At the age of 21, he recorded his first and only album, the instrumental “Embalo”, in 1964.
In this album, Tenorio Jr. was accompanied by Sérgio Barroso (bass), Milton Banana (drums), Rubens Bassini (congas), Celso Brando (acoustic guitar), Neco (electric guitar), Pedro Paulo (trumpet), Maurilio (trumpet), Edson Maciel (trombone), Raul de Souza (trombone), Paulo Moura (alto sax), J.T. Meirelles (tenor sax) and Hector Costita (tenor sax).
In 1976, after a concert in Buenos Aires (Argentina), where he accompanied Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho, Tenorio Jr. mysteriously disappeared.
He had left a note under the door of Vinicius’ room at the Normandie Hotel, saying “I’m going out to buy cigarettes and medicine. Will be back soon”. But he never came back.
He had been arrested by the Argentinian military dictatorship police, then tortured and shot in the head.
