the most brilliant, creative, and inventive guitarist and songwriter to come out of post-punk, if not punk rock as a whole. marquee moon has one of the greatest crescendi in the history of rock music (bear in mind, i have 7,695 godspeed you! black emperor plays – i know a bit about crescendi). Verlaine and Lloyd’s guitars interlocked in a startling, unique, and revolutionary manner, later emerging as one of the obvious precursors of alternative rock. and their songs merged the energy of punk with the sophistication of prog rock and jazz fusion. Verlaine’s voice was equally unique – maybe not technically “great”, but incredibly emotionally expressive; it fit the music perfectly. and his way with wordplay still astonishes me. i don’t know if i can name a better opening couplet to a song than “i remember how the darkness doubled / i recall lightning struck itself”. i doubt we’ll ever see his likes again. RIP to a legend.

When I listened to Television for the first time, in the 80's/90's, I found it really strange. Unlike the other punk bands I listened to at the time. I don't think I liked it, but something fascinated me and impelled me to delve deeper into this strange poetic and musical broth and I ended up definitely falling in love with its music and its leader Thomas Miller, or Tom Verlaine, as he became known. Thank you and rest in peace.

these couple of past years a lot of people i admire passed away, and i mean A LOT of people. but none quite got to me like tom. some 7 hours have passed since i've heard about his passing, and every now and again tears come out. that's a testament to how magical he was, i've read somebody calling him a sorcerer and that's so true. rest in power tom verlaine, i'll think of you till the day i die.
