"The Great War" is a metaphor for a tumultuous relationship. It tells the story of two people engaging in a fierce battle, fighting and damaging each other in the process, until eventually they call a truce, realizing that their bond is worth more than their differences. The lyrics describe the characters’ struggles, the physical and psychological exhaustion, and the "good faith treaties" and "poppy" at the end which imply newfound hope and peace. Ultimately, the song conveys the message that despite their differences, two people can still find a way to peace, understanding, and love.
