Anyone has recommendations on music similar to the first passage of Sleepless Swans? Overall, the quiet passages of their music are beautiful so much, but that melody really hits the nails. As a sound archetype, I can think of Katatonia (hear The Justice of Suffering sound like Renkse's vocals) and Anathema, when listening to it. But obviously, there may be many more. What do you people think?

Jonas Renkse himself was the featuring artist on The Justice of Suffering :) imo, New Moon album was the big shift through their 'calmer' compositions and cleaner production, since then they tried the formula that consists clean guitar/vocal intros more. And I think they preferred more progressive-melo-death approach instead of early 2000's intense doom-death sound. Though, they had featured similar compositions once in every album before New Moon, such as The Morning Never Came, Losing The Sunsets, and 'Gloom, Beauty and Despair' (to some extend). That sound archetype you mentioned was generally consists switching between natural minors (especially 3rd and 6th minors) and seven-tone scales (melodic and harmonic minors). Actually, the latter is mostly used in Norse folk and medieval folk music and also highly appreciated by modern Scandinavian metal music scenes. Apply that formula to the down-picking distorted guitar riffs and you got that early Katatonia and Anathema sound.

This is actually great when people can combine these absolute different worlds of k-pop & metal and enjoy both kinds of music in their own ways, while not giving any damn about "true" metalheads or k-popers opinions.

Both fanbases surely have some of the worst sides of humanity featured on the extreme ends, gatekeeping (more in metal I believe) and obsessiveness (more in K-pop imo)

hahahah it's weird, right? but that's the coolest part :) liking extremely opposite things gave me a pretty open mind, the best thing is to not judge anyone by their taste, that's really stupid. the plurality of the word is what makes it beautiful, so let's enjoy good songs and be happy ♥

i can’t listen to anything but moonflowers. it becomes more beautiful at each listening. what a songwriter Juha is. what a band. how can they do something so amazing, so full of grief and so beautiful? i hope Juha’s grief for Aleah becomes a longing that doesn’t hurt so much. I send him my love and my admiration. Hope one day I can see them live. It will be a dream coming true.

The more I listen to it, the more I love Moonflowers. Does it have the power of New Moon or Hope? No of course not. But there are some really deep emotional tunes on this record. I find myself wishing they used harsh vocals less which is saying something because I adore Mikko's range of harsh vox.

Hmm, I know what you mean. I've loved their all the harsh vocals on all the albums for the most part but on the recent records where most of the song is sung cleanly, a C or D part of the song featuring a sudden outburst of harsh vocals sometimes feels a little bit forced to me, just from the songwriting perspective. I don't have a lot of examples of this because usually it works so dynamically imo, but I have to say Firelights and Woven into Sorrow are a bit like that

"Moonflowers" definitely seems to continue down the same vein as "When A Shadow Is Forced Into The Light" as far as their soundscape is concerned. Swallow The Sun will always be one of my favorite bands to ever exist, but I think it's safe to say that this new sound is here to stay, with their newfound focus on production and melancholy. I certainly do like it, but it just doesn't hit the same. I respect the musicianship a lot, because even though they have mellowed out quite a bit since their peak, the melodies still have an unquestionable Swallow The Sun vibe, and I'm always gonna be happy with that. At least they're consistent, they haven't ever written a bad song, and that's something that can still be said.

"Can you dream, can you breathe with a broken will?" - Moonflowers is a really good album.

Idk if people really think it this way, the newer albums changed into more melancholic ever since Aleah passed away and that is understandable since Juha writes most of the music. You can think it's less aggressive and so, more boring but take into consideration the music is a reflection of a real persons emotions.

Moonflowers is a perfect Swallow the Sun album, with the addition of more strings and more preponderant clean vocals the whole record has a dark prog feel to it, although this is a more "uplifting" work than WASFITL. The transitions in the songs are also more subtle than ever. Flawless.

I think the past 2 albums are more adventurous sounding than New Moon, although I can see why anyone would think they're more radio friendly. But I don't understand the Opeth comparison, especially because StW didn't stripped down everything they were, but have taken every single aspect of their sound to the max. I think there's something for everyone to love. From funeral doom, death doom or full blown gothic

I prefer what they did on Hope and Songs I, but I really love ultra slow songs like Swallow or their black doom in Hate, Lead The Way. I love everything about When A Shadow and now Moonflowers, which is a very balanced blend of everything StS is

man, how can your life be such a mess that you have to use racist slurs against someone who literally did nothing to you, only made a joke about a negative comment about SwS new album? what a mess of a life. are all italians just like you, calling people apes? a shame last.fm doesn't have the option to report for target harassment, but i feel very, very bad for you. it must be a miserable life. by the way, SwS new album is very beautiful and featutes a beautiful black woman in one of the most beautiful songs Juha has ever wrote. ;-)

I always say that if Katatonia decided to keep their Brave Murder Day doom death sound, today they would sound exactly like Swallow The Sun

I have to disagree, StS does come from similar place to old Katatonia but it sounds nothing like it to my ears. Katatonia had always a slick, dirty, down-to-earth approach on Brave Murder Day that was expanded on their later albums, as well as a very driven, slow/mid tempo approach. Swallow The Sun has a much more rural, majestic, classic doomy vibe with much slower tempos and more pathos in the sound. If you want to hear how Katatonia would sound had it kept the death/doom sound check out the now defunct band Rapture which pretty much continued with their sound where Katatonia left off, and reached awesome conclusions with their second and third albums (Songs for the Withering and Silent Stage).

I can't listen to Rapture that much. To me they sound too much like a lifeless copy of Katatonia's BMD/Discouraged Ones. I'd rather listen to those albums. I still maintain my point about Katatonia and StS, maybe because of how many times I saw StS members talking about how they worship Katatonia. Lol I don't know

I think their black metal moments are way too little for us to put them under that label, but as far as doom death goes, StS are undoubtedly the leading band. No wonder why almost every single new band in the genre tries to sound like them
