Amazing to think he wrote this song in 2003 and then compare it to C&L 12 years later. Complex feelings about family and the pain and positivity they can cause in equal measure really do last for forever. I think about that a lot every time I hear this. It really helps me process feelings and the fact that I might never move past things and that might be ok.

I like when he sing the verses "I was ashamed of her" of the last strophe slightly low the part "of her", as if he was a bit ashamed of be ashamed of her, and then after, on a type of crescendo, he affirm it properly sing slightly loud the others verses "I was ashamed" until the end of the song, but "of her" always shy. [2] Came here to say this. This song is so damn beautiful.

lt's a dirty lie to tell the people that if you're good, you stay, and if you're bad, you run, because she didn't stay! Fuck it, man, she didn't stay! People don't stay! - Lenny Bruce -

it makes me think of: ''oh my mother she betrayed us, but our father loved and bathed us''. From ''Seers tower, illinois''.

The way his voice breaks into a whisper at the end when he says, "I was ashamed of her," is my all-time favorite Sufjan moment.
