The 80s was a bad decade for Stevie, but on Hotter Than July he's basically still riding his incredible 70s hot streak. It's maybe a bit weaker than the murderers' row that preceded it, but considering those are some of the greatest records anyone has ever made, there's no shame in that. And anyway I consider Innervisions to be his absolute peak, with the others just a touch below, so I would comfortably put this one alongside those. Essential.

If you have to buy an 80's Stevie album, take this one! It's a no brainer. [3] There's some really great songs and there's some songs that I don't particularly care for so much on this album. "Lately" is such a great ballad, yet to counter that I didn't like the country sort of thing going on with "I Ain't Gonna Stand for It".
