Tennessee Blues was written about Earle's move from Nashville to New York City, where he recorded Washington Square Serenade. It is an update of his previous song, "Guitar Town", hence the reference in the chorus "Goodbye Guitar Town." The "red head by my side" is a reference to his wife, Allison Moorer.
