Originally recorded for the album "Aja", and originally titled , "Were You Blind That Day?", "Third World Man" was included as one of only seven tracks on "Gaucho", released in November, 1980. The track features the guitar work of three-time Grammy Award winner, Larry Carlton. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, were unhappy with Were You Blind That Day?, and completely reworked the song, centering it around Carlton's performance on the original recording. Carlton has said that he was not even aware his work had been used on Gaucho, until he read a review in Billboard magazine praising his guitar solo. Gaucho reached #9 on the charts and was certified double platinum.
