This album really is a grower. I loved everything from their debut to Aja on pretty much first listen, but this one never clicked with me for some reason until recently. I especially love the title track, which I think is one of the finest pop songs of all time. That sax melody gets stuck in my head all the time.

very good, of course, but like the beatles before them, they learned too late that you can't just end every damn song with a fade-out

This album is mostly really good but everything they were trying to do here they did better on Aja.

Glamour Profession is genius, the way the music keeps rolling forward and expanding. Very sophisticated song.

Probably the overall darkest, most cynical album Dan ever made? I always knew Los Angeles was a wicked place, but damn...

This one has continued to grow on me over the years more than any other album by the Dan, and several of their others have continued to grow plenty on me long after I already really liked/loved them so that is really saying something. As many others have stated, this album is THE high water mark for great sounding records; nearly all of the Dan's LPs sound fantastic, but Gaucho is on a whole other level -- everything is crystal clear and beautifully separated, plenty of dynamic range... it just sounds spectacular. I've now got 8 versions of it, and my pick for the best sounding issue is the 2010 Geffen SHM-SACD from Japan -- absolutely beautiful sound. Of course, the main thing is always the music. If the record simply sounded good but didn't have the music to go along with the pristine sound quality, it would be a waste. Fortunately the songwriting and playing is exquisite. Nearly every song here is a "loved" track for me, but my favorites are My Rival and Gaucho. Get this ASAP.

Stunning audio quality, unheard of for its time. Steely Dan's attention to detail is unmatched in modern music history, and this album is a prime example of that meticulousness. Absolute masterpiece, and tied with Aja for my favorite Steely Dan album (simply can't choose between the two).

This one is extremely underrated both among fans and critics. It sounds like a glossy pop record (albeit one that's musically complex and performed by some of the most professional musicians in the world), but under that surface sheen it's a dark record with some really cynical (but funny) lyrics. Perfectly captures what I imagine the LA/Hollywood of the early 80s to be like.

It's too bad the song "The Second Arrangment" was erased. It would have added alot to this album.

My favourite Dan album (though they were incapable of releasing a bad track: the 4 cd Citizen box set is immaculate). Time out of Mind, Hey Nineteen, Gaucho, Third World Man.... Chandleresque lyrics. The milk truck eased into my space, somebody screamed somewhere. I struck a match against the door of Anthony's bar and grill.

Almost every line in "My Rival" totally kills me. "Gaucho" and "Glamor Profession" are great, too. I always wonder where the hell they get those little details from. I prefer Gaucho to Aja because there's more substance to most of the songs lyrically, though someone who really knows the music side of things may disagree. Maybe not my favorite of theirs, but it has many great moments.
