In my opinion, this is the "El Supremo" of Steely Dan albums. Each song is a treasure, tracks that can be played over and over again with much enjoyment - well, except for maybe "Razor Boy". "King of the World" is sublime, one of the true hidden gems of the Steely Dan discography. I love The Royal Scam and Aja too, but Countdown takes the cake for me.

Not that it's anything less than a very good record, but this one is the Steely Dan album I've listened to by far the least over the years. "Bodhisattva," "Razor Boy," "Your Gold Teeth," "Show Biz Kids" and "My Old School" are all terrific songs but the others don't do a lot for me. This one seems like a transitional effort after the more band-oriented debut but before the trademark professionalism that began with Pretzel Logic and has persisted to the present day.

Alright, I'm finally starting to really embrace Countdown to Ecstasy. I still wouldn't rate it at the top of their discography (though considering how high of regard I hold several of their records, that's nothing to be ashamed of), but "The Boston Rag" has grown on me immensely and I've come to like the others pretty well too. Some really excellent playing, as always, with the guitars (courtesy of Jeff Baxter) and Fagen's keyboards being total highlights. I've come around to "King of the World" in a big way, too. I don't think it'll ever become my pick for best Steely Dan album or my favorite Steely Dan album, but my appreciation of and love for it has grown considerably the past couple of years. Maybe it will continue to do so.

I agree , I agree , to me this album was the height of S.D., Jeff Baxter shows what a gifted musician/guitar player he is (Check him out on You Tube) ! All members contributing to the songwriting efforts of Fagen and Becker which were/are brilliant ! When in the early nineties a tour by Fagen, Becker and M. McDonald under the guise of "The New York Rock and Soul Review" .The group brought down the house with "My Old School" and "The Boston Rag" ! Shows that great songs will not grow old. Odd not one track off this album made the top ten charts......huh?
