Star Star is a glam punk band formed in the late 80's. Described as "too punk for rock, and too rock for punk," their dirty, sleaze driven music never crossed over to mainstream success, which could have also been due to the rise of grunge in the early 90's.
The band is named after The Rolling Stones song "Star Star," as evidence that their official website's address is star fucker star, a lyric in the song.
The band released two albums, "Go Go Girls in Love" and "The Love Drag Years" (as well as the "Science Fiction Boy EP") in the hey day of glam metal, but didn't have the over the top look dominating MTV at the time to match their critically acclaimed music. Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks makes a cameo in the music video for "Science Fiction Boy" (off of "The Love Drag Years" album).
Even though Star Star is considered a New York band, they originally formed in Hollywood. Star Star quickly signed to the Roadrunner label and took almost a year to record the "The Love Drag Years", with producers/mixers Earle Mankey, Richard Gottehrer, Neil Kernon, and Phil Greene, across studios in New York, Los Angeles and New England.
A dark period followed when singer/guitarist Johnnie Holliday suffered a serious car accident, undergoing a number of surgeries. More blows were dealt when guitarist Jay Hening committed suicide, and drummer Deon Molyneux passed away due to illness.
Johnnie and Weeds split to Europe where they met drummer Jack Kennedy at a club, trying not to ruin his hair or spill his drink while hassling with his screaming girlfriend. So, being that he was quitting alcohol, they asked him to join the band.
After a fallout with Kennedy, they added two back-up singers, known as The Trashettes, and a fiery drummer called Chris Jones and along with Trashette Elaine Nardo Sunset, Star Star was back in their coveted underground scene.
Even at high profile gigs as the lone opening act for bands like Alice Cooper, Guns n Roses, Girlschool, Marky Ramone, Joan Jett, and a bunch more, Star Star stayed true to their club culture and their “trash values with no apology” as the New York Times wrote.
In 2020 Johnnie and Weeds re-united with drummer Jack Kennedy and called the band Scream Idol.
The debut album will be out this Fall 2021.
