As Annie stated, this song is a “revenge fantasy” in a domestic physical abuse story. The female protagonist, having suffered at the hands of her male partner, promises to bring him down crying to his friends. The cockiness of the song is influenced by the Stevie Wonder-ish or Prince-ish instrumentation which bubbles with a relentless therapeutic funky mood as a sonic representation of a giant middle finger.
"The song ‘Down’ is basically a revenge fantasy. We’ve all had a situation where we’ve been wronged. We didn’t do shit to nobody, we didn’t fuck with anybody, and somebody just, like, sticks you with a shiv. He played some ripping drums and some Wurli and I was playing guitar and it was just so fun. I’m so glad that rather than stewing and being aggrieved, I get to turn it into something that’s super fun."
