i saw a concert on Saturday. the venue mostly seats at tables and the couple next to me did not look happy most of the time. one of them had briefly mentioned this band when we were engaging in some small-talk before the show. days later, i came to the realization that i think this middle-aged couple unironically booked tickets to see [artist]Spyro+Gyra[/artist] thinking it was this group. i kinda feel bad for them LOL

Great british band playing progressive folk-rock with elements of psychedelic. They formed ambitious compositions having an amazing, mysterious atmosphere, engaging melodies. Interestingly in their music they fared contrast between the raw male vocals (Martin Cockerham) and gentle, soulful female vocals (Barbara Gaskin). An important role in their music played the violin sound. A beautiful, richly orchestrated music from the soul, which is worth to know :)

Recently checked out 'Bells, Boots and Shambles' what a bloody brilliant piece of work. It's sorely neglected.

It's interesting that they are stylistically similar in many ways to Comus, but Martin Cockerham claimed in an interview that he had never heard of the band until they resurfaced years later.

Un-hippy-dippy folk, almost punky, sometimes bitter lyrics and stabbing, rough music, like sandpaper to the ol' lugholes, nice counterpoint between the vocalists...this is good stuff, if you like Comus you'll dig these lot

[user]CUNTSCURVY[/user] said that I have to have all three albums, but there are FOUR CD's in my collection: 1970 [album artist=Spirogyra]Burn The Bridges[/album] 1972 [album artist=Spirogyra]St. Radigunds[/album] 1972 [album artist=Spirogyra]Old Boot Wine[/album] 1973 [album artist=Spirogyra]Bells, Boots And Shambles[/album] Seems like I'm lucky one:)

If you check this band out, make sure you get all three albums. They are all masterpieces in their own ways - very distinct from one another yet still recognizable as the same great band. I think the Comus comparisons are pretty distant/weak but it's probably still accurate to say if you like Comus you'll be able to appreciate Spirogyra.

Bells, Boots and Shambles reminds me of Magna Carta's Lord of the ages. Good stuff!
