I have faith that this once great band can rise from the ashes and become great again. It doesn't need to be the old sound, it can even be all clean vocals if done right. It just needs the instrumentation to be fast and energetic, and the catchy, flowing choruses of the second, third and (some of) fourth albums.

I thought the self titled was a banger except for the mastering/production but I know I'm fairly alone with that opinion.

I could not agree with you more to both of you. @ILDHJERTE: For sure. I think what made their earlier material so good is the fact of the heaviness while also being catchy and I think the fact it made them go poppy just really wasn't smart. I have faith in these guys but it'll probably take some time. Thank god for The Unguided! @MachineAnimal: For sure. Tbh, besides Confessions I've liked all their other albums.

Boy these started sucking really fast. I don't even think they have that cute chick in the band anymore, huge potential wasted.

Nothing wrong with a bit of cheese. I listen to and appreciate all styles of melodeath and symphonicmetal, from the "authentic" to the more pop style. XD Those pop choruses ARE really catchy dangit. :3

I just really used to love this band and the first 3 albums was awesome and the fourth was still okay but after that I'm so disappointed and the last album, it was like a whole different band. They should have changed the bands name before releasing that album. I'm so sad, a fucking awesome kickass band went straight down to toilet.

Don't sweat it, man; in the world we live that's sadly valid for 90% of the bands. Being a metalhead in the 21st century teaches you how to manage your expectations really early on :D

Enhance My Nightmare is their best song. It's a great example of metalcore influenced by melodic death metal without completely ripping it off.

They should not even be named Sonic Syndicate now...with only one original member.

I love this band but Confessions was horrible 😑 I understand they probably wanted to take a different direction but they can't do pop rock. I hope they go back to their heavier stuff, whether its metalcore or melodic death metal :\

I thought the self titled album was mostly great but apparently that was trying to please the old fans and they'd rather do this pop/rock shit. Sonic Syndicate is pretty much dead now.

I usually can deal when a good amount of bands go popier, but honestly seeing this band do it pisses me off. I really was hoping that this band was just going to sound like their past two albums or end up going to their old style so to see them just replace the lineup and change it around just irritates the crap outta me.

Yeah i know what you're talking about. Sonic Syndicate's Discography was very good. I'm sure i can't speak for the majority if I say that "We rule the night" is my favorite album, but damn I like this one. And now... Pop music? not my thing. But there are still "The Unguided", a band formed from the past members of sonic syndicate. and they are awesome!

Here's something I found, it's an EP with three Sonic Syndicate songs "covered". I put covered in quotation because Roger and Roland are involved and it's obviously Richard screaming (not alone, there's another screamer involved handling the screaming parts Roland and Nathan did on the originals). Anyways the songs are Rebellion in nightmare land, Heart of Eve and Freeman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpg66pAHAJs&list=UUYNwtzJLpp1BD8tvbbvb49A

I've been reading rave reviews of their new gigs though from reviewers who don't know the bands history. Seem they pull off very energetic shows playing mostly the new album and We Rule the Night material + Jack of Diamonds on this Spring tour. So if that's your cup of tea go see them. I'm slightly regretting I didn't but I'd have hoped songs from the self titled album as I'm one of the few fans of that record.

So, being someone who loved WRTN at release... I always found SS to be a solid but average melodeath band. Then WRTN came and I loved it for blending heavier metal punch with pop and getting away with it. Yes I have a soft spot for pop metal, I wish, instead of the tons of repetive djent/core/melodeath wannabie bands more groups would develop that style. So, when I read the hate on the new album I thought "nice, maybe another one I'll like"... And I couldn't get passed the third song. It's not pop metal, it's pop rock, and I don't mind that, but it's *bad* pop rock. It has no strong melodies, no hooks, no good singing... Melodies are what made WRTN for me, so by going more pop they should do better at it, right?... RIIIGHT?... Funny thing, while writing this I put on WRTN again and I am amazed by the great vocal performance on some of the songs (E.g Plans Are For People where they contrinute to a great, desperate atmosphere). And then vocals on the new one... What the hell happened?

Yeah, I've come to appreciate WRTN a LOT more in retrospect. Especially after this album. And in regards to the melodies, I totally agree. And their previous album -- the self titled album -- had the same problem. The choruses were incredibly weak. And that trend has continued on this album. Except that unlike the self-titled, this album can't rely on intensity and energy to carry it. It has to be WHOLLY melodic... And it just isn't. Only the title track and Start a War are good songs. Everything else is just bad. And like you said, not bad BECAUSE it's pop rock (I too like pop rock), but it's bad because it fails at being good pop rock.

I don't know what's going to happen to this band going forward, but they seriously need to go do some studying on catchy songwriting, because this isn't cutting it.

I can't comprehend how they managed to create such a shit album. Bands should get better through the years not the other way around :/ "Confessions" makes the self-titled record a good one :( At least we still have Eden Fire...

My reaction to "Confessions" is basically the same as I originally thought about We Rule The Night. Would've liked it a lot more if it was a different band. If it was a different band, I would've liked it (or at least the general sound) immediately. The title track and "Start a War" are pretty good songs, imo. I thought I had gotten over it and accepted it, after I mellowed out from the radical departure of We Rule The Night. I listened to the first two singles they released and thought "I am totally okay with this." After all, I like Pop Rock, and this sounds pretty good. But when I listened to the album back to back... my heart bled. And now, I find myself longing back to even the WRTN sound... And it didn't help that there were more filler tracks on this album than any of their previous albums... The only difference between my reaction to this and my reaction back when WRTN came out is that back then, my reaction was rage due to a feeling of betrayal. Now, I just feel sadness.

"Love And Other Disasters" was pretty much Only Inhuman part 2. And even better than OI, imo.

No, "Love and other Desasters" was already with a massive Malcore influence. Roland's voice and solid songwriting saved the release. "Eden Fire" and "Only Inhuman" are the classics.

Yup Confessions is by the far the worst thing that SS have come out with. They pretty much threw everything they had out the window and are just starting to pick at straws. The songwriting is terrible, the choruses are emotionless and stale, the vocal melodies are boring and mediocre at best, the electronics have no feeling, no atmosphere, and are entirely lifeless, the riffs are the most simplistic and desperate compositions you can have and are ridiculously overproduced when they come. Sometimes in a few songs theyll work in a decent idea that would actually work if the song writing was better but its not so those parts are just wasted minor potential. The songs Closure and Still Believe have beaten out Turn It Up for the worst song by SS. Funny enough I actually dont feel angry about this album even after all this bitching about it because im not surprised that they decided to sell out this hard, all this album is for me is a painful and dull journey I wont go through with again.

"Confessions" is even worse than "We Rule The Night". Congratulations to that, Sonic Syndicate. Climbing up a big pile of shit to drop another pile of shit on it is an achievement reserved only for a very little and illustrious circle of bands. And those guys just did it with ease. It says a whole damn lot that Nuclear Blast (hello, even Nuclear Blast!) couldn't stand this bullshit and let down those guys as a consequence. There's only one lil' thing I just can't comprehend: why Despotz Records decided to release this abomination. Do they get subsidies by giving those three losers a new home labelwise?

Robic syndiNate is like a blind dick in space thrusting in infinite directions desperately trying to make people give a shit. When the generic chugging didn't work on the last release they're going for a generic pop approach instead. Don't get me wrong here, there's nothing wrong with pop, but these guys obviously don't have much inspiration or vision at all they're just trying to salvage what fame they thought they were in for with We Rule The Night.

To be honest: I like their new style, it's definetly refreshing and it's definetly not bad songwriting. I loved the debut of The Unguided back then in 2011 but afterwards they recorded the same debut again and again. Yeah it was a trilogy but no step forward between their three albums. Therefore I prefer what Sonic Syndicate is doing: It's better to do what you feel you want to do than trying to be the band everyone wants to have.

You know I disagree with you Syndicaidramon. I don't see The Unguided material as more mainstream or less heavy than Only Inhuman or LAOD stuff which were imo the best of SS until the self titled album which I prefer as much or even more. The few lamer moments of LAOD can't compare to the overall failure of WRTN. Although that album has some great or good songs like Burn This City, Break Of Day, Plans Are For People and the title track. Heart of Eve and Dead and Gone were bonus tracks and a bit heavier but fairly typical SS stuff. I'd only say they were decent tracks and not even really part of the album. The biggest failure of WRTN is the lyrics though like MoogInRow said. I happen to like the lyrics of Plans Are For People and Break Of Day but those are the exceptions. From The Unguided Fragile Immortality was a bit samey but Lust and Loathing has more variety and new things which was nice.

The only thing The Unguided has going for it in terms of post-LAOD evolution is the lyrics, which are way beyond most of what can be found on WRTN, which was that album's weakest point by far. Self titled album improved in that regard, but had, for the most part, rather lackluster songwriting... And while Hellfrost was a decently diverse album, Fragile Immortality was just incredibly samey. Every song felt like a copy/paste.

@MachineAnimal: I can't say I agree. The Unguided is far too safe and mainstream imo. Honestly, when listening to a lot of their tracks, they're really not too far from WRTN in terms of commercial appeal. Except that they're absolutely drowning in poppy synths most of the time, which ends up making them sound MORE commercially accessible than WRTN ever was. I mean, at least WRTN had tracks like "Break of Day", "Heart of Eve" and "Dead And Gone". What's the fastest, heaviest track The Unguided has? I'd say "Collapse My Dream" and it's on the level of an average Sonic Syndicate track at best in terms of intensity and energy.
