Revisiting this record after many, many years is a very interesting and enjoyable experience. Yes, it's here when Soilwork actually went more "alternative" than "melodeath", but you know what? What makes this band awesome is the fact that they doesn't go wrong with all the directions they took on their career, and this album is no exception, so many good tunes here. While it might be akin to a lot of stuff of that period in Metal (early-to-mid 00s) it kinda aged far better than many of its contemporaries and similar records; it's their most played album here for a good reason.

I could never get into this one. Played it a few times and just ended up giving it away.

This album holds some memories for me. Rejection Role was the very first Soilwork song I've ever heard over 10 years ago, but the album itself didn't resonate with me well at the time. Stabbing the Drama was the album that really got me into them. Later on, I came back to this album & it finally clicked with me. Although Natural Born Chaos will always be my favorite album by them, this album flat-out rocks & has some of the most infectious choruses they've come up with.

Pop-Metalcore-Pseudo-Death Metal hybrid. Downfall 24 is my guilty pleasure though.

One of the best. Yeah yeah, it's the softest album they've ever done. I can see why it would have been a shock to the system to any fans at the time, but I guess I was lucky in that STD was my introduction to the band. This album is way better than that one, amazing songs with beautiful melodies. One of my favourites, but I'm glad they've gotten heavier again.

I'm surprised that this is even labeled as melodic death metal. He sings metalcore style and the music is alternative metal with melodeath influences.

That copy-pasted twig on the cover bothers the crap out of me. Otherwise it's a fun power pop album. :)

This album is great. That's just a guess, but I think, they made this album because of the more rock/softer riffs they gathered throughout time. They had enough riffs/melodies that wouldn't fit the default melodic death metal sound and simply made one softer album (this is why usually a side-projects happen, when musicians don't want to ruin their main band sound with some different sounding riffs) and afterwards returned more or less to their roots again, which is great, unlike In Flames, when they did a softer album and stuck with it, now for many years already. p.s. Overload is great song.

I'd say because really the songs not being "brutal" by any means... and actually (at least to what I'm accustomed to) finding this to be the closest thing they have or will ever do to a "rock" record... Bjorn's voice is amazing not just on some of those mesmerizing melodies ("Rejection Role", "Overload", "Departure Plan", "Cranking the Sirens" which is my personal favorite track on the record, as well as the close "Downfall 24") but during verses where Bjorn isn't exactly screaming OR singing, he's like in/between & doing both simultaneously... something that now on the last 2 records "The Panic Broadcast" & "The Living Infinite" he's really MASTERED, in my opinion. F#5 gets an 8.5/10 for me... technically it's my 5th favorite record. (The Living Infinite, The Panic Broadcast, A Predator's Portrait and Stabbing the Drama are my Top 4...)

Not their best album, but it definitely has its moments. This was an album where they wanted to play simple I think, and it doesn't really stand up as well since Dirk's drumming overshadows this drummer greatly.

the post about Ranta being held back...kind of true sadly. he's still good here (and has more flavor to his playing than Dirk likely ever will) but def more generic than on APP and NBC.

An album with loads of potential. The melodies are no less than fantastic (as expected of Soilwork), the solos are beautifully pulled off even though they deserved way more room than they got, the hooks are there, Speed's voice is god-like and the keyboards bind everything together seamlessly. Too bad the song-writing itself is so generic. As soon as you've heard the first chorus you basically know the entire song. So much more could have been done with this album. If they had only dared to make the songs longer than 3-4 minutes and given instrumental breaks more room this one could've easily been up there with their first four albums. Also, it kinda feels like Henry Ranta was held back a bit on this one; possibly the biggest disappointment about the album.

hmm... yesterday I listened to Stabbing The Drama and then to Figure Number Five. And I must say that STD is better, though FNF is awesome as well
