Biography
Smug Anime Face is a 3-piece noisecore band from nipaluna/Hobart, lutruwita/Tasmania. Formed by Axel Murphy (guitar/vocals), Cameron Foster (synth/samples/vocals) and Sean Wyers (percussion), they performed for the first time in 2018 at Little Bands, a revival of the Melbourne post-punk scene in nipaluna/Hobart held at The Arts Hall. A notable influence is The Locust, expressed in their donning of masks and elaborate stage costumes early in their live performances as well as their grind/noisecore similarities.
In 2019 they released a demo EP that included the songs that would be on their 2020 debut album "Filthy Waters". Prior to COVID they gigged heavily in the local circuit, many of their shows being played at the now closed Brisbane Hotel. Since their inception they have been close friends with local thrash punks Threats and have shared many stage bills with them. Together, the two bands would independently release a 7" split in 2022.
Also in 2022, Smug Anime Face were included on a hardcore grind compilation called "They Call Me Armageddon Vol. 4" with their track "HACHIKŌ".
