Interesting band...difficult to define, but the Drumeo interview with "II" put me onto them. It's mostly pop that occasionally goes hard. Maybe this is the 2020s answer to Linkin Park --a crossover between genres that opens pop fans up to something heavier and metal fans up to something lighter... For what it is worth, I really like bands that are brave enough to leave their genre once in a while, growing up on 80s and 90s thrash and groove metal that has all started to sound the same. Also, the track Vore absolutely rules.

Actually good band, but the Imagine Dragons-type vocals are a huge turn off. Hate that trend in modern day music ffs

I don't give a rat's ass what people listen to or if they like this. It isn't metal and if people want to get all pissy about it, it's not my fault or whatever metal elitists do. Isn't that the whole "controversy" is about, nor this has anything to do with what's defining of good art. Not once did I say this sucks or why do people listen to it. It just isn't a metal band.

Sounds like you're the one who needs to calm down. Bye. Typical pop listeners, don't want to listen to anyone well versed and just get angry at them instead. And if anyone cares nu metal isn't labeled hip hop because they rap in it. Problem with fusion genres is that they don't fit into a set genre. Sleep Token is mostly pop music that inserts some metal in, not enough to really call them metal. Listen to folk metal and you'll see its metal that adds folk music, but for the same reason they're not labeled folk music. Folk music fans wont consider it folk much the same way seasoned metalheads don't consider fusion genred bands metal

People are only talking abt how they are not metal or a disgrace to the genre. But let's just disconnect their music from genre and talk abt just how ethereal, mystical and just good they sound. You like them or not, u don't have to mix these thing up. Have a good night everyone.

God, it's not surprising that this band blew up on tiktok. Also explains why some people think it's metal.

Bati meu carro ouvindo Sleep Token.

listened to the Spiritbox EP and some random songs from Take Me Back To Eden and Spiritbox, obviously is harder, djent/progressive post hardcore. Spiritbox isn't 'metal' either but they're arguably more 'metal' than Sleep Token. Which is funny because Courtney [Spiritbox] says metalheads are too obsessed over genres (metal subgenres). Its like how the hell can you not tell the difference between what's metal and what's not. Plenty of metal bands do fusions of other genres such as Eluveitie which both uses metal and folk music and both styles are there. Epica, metal and opera/symphonic-theatrical, Korpiklaani and Alestorm a couple of others. They sound nothing like Spiritbox or well Sleep Token. If I had to guess those who struggle to understand genres/subgenres must not really be focused on the music or have never actually listened to metal. Nu metal, metalcore, deathcore are not true metal genres either which I noticed that general Sleep Token/Spiritbox listeners gravitate towards.

Spiritbox is almost entirely hardcore. It's not a knock on them (I'm not a fan, but I see the appeal) but there's very little that's metal-influenced. It's bizarre how little people consider and value hardcore as the legacy is massive and it rivals that of metal. In fact, harsh vocals are not themselves a feature of metal, harsh vocals come directly from the hardcore influence by way of crossover and thrash metal.

Well yeah thrash metal came around from hardcore, early Death Angel (The Ultra-Violence album) for an example use the hardcore vocal style and Slayer though Metallica was less hardcore, but even Ride the Lightning has quite some hardcore influences with the riffing I believe so a lot of metal, particularly with the harsh vocals is from hardcore. I guess it depends on how you look at it. I even think that we have death metal thanks to hardcore, though it's more growling than screaming.

Of course, there's always gray areas and such, this sort of taxonomy isn't an exact science or anything. I'm just stating that I don't think Spiritbox fits the description of "metal" and how there's so many bands tagged as "metal" that are very clearly hardcore. It almost seems like there's a branding problem with hardcore, a lack of due recognition. But, yeah, middle grounds, nebulous lines, perspectives...

Other than the fact that this isn't metal at all, I don't see why they get so much hate. Is it the best thing ever? Not even close, but it's pretty decent most of the time. It's one of those bands that are easy to listen to, and sometimes that's just what you need.

Can someone please explain the appeal to me? I gave them a go back when they made a cover of "Is it Really You?" by Loathe (at the time my favorite band) decided to give Sundowning a spin, found the vocals grating, and the riffs not all that compelling, put them down and forgot about them. Now all my friends and half the internet are hyping them up to me because 'Chen! you listen to metal, you have to listen to Sleeptoken!", give their newer album a listen to see if something changed and its the same shit which I still don't like. Is there something I'm missing? Where's all the hype coming from??

Yeah it's way overhyped. Let alone I love metal and Sleep Token is so far from being metal.. I get the same hype from everyone else like, what is this. People talking about a mediocre band trying to say this is the future of metal like where is this coming from. Metal outlets are hyping this band beyond belief and now it's like metalheads are doing the same and I'm just here thinking, this is just ridiculously crazy. I don't get the hype either especially since the older I get the more I want traditional sounding metal instead of the same old pop metal trend.

I think its probably just that this is the first metal band since the great Nu-Metal crash of 2003 to really capture mainstream interest, so people want to hype it up as much as possible. I'm happy the band exists even if I can't stand their music. If this becomes the gateway band that gets next generation into metal then that's hardly a bad thing. It feels like a lot of older Metalheads forget that they ever weren't a metalhead, but everyone has to start somewhere. I just legitimately want to know why people like the band.

I'm not exactly sure what kind of exposure they're really expecting. I think the biggest thing is metal is largely ignored due to the harsh vocals and loud/noisy music. Granted I like a lot of extreme metal, death/black/thrash metal and I think nu metal tried to bring metal to the masses which it worked pretty well for the classic metal and thrash which was already big in the scene. You got the originals in metal, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Metallica which are about to retire. Death metal isn't really appealing to the masses and power metal is still widely cheesy. The major problem I see with modern metal is they ditch most of what made metal appealing in the first place. They did ditch alot of the cheesyness which is all they could have did away with. Most modern metal bands don't do any solos either, Orbit Culture is the only one that has a few. Newer old school death metal bands are among the few that kept the solo riffing melodies but again, automatically doesn't appeal...

..to the masses. I think it's a good thing to try to appeal to the masses, it's just that I don't ever see bands like Sleep Token making any real progress and instead it's just dividing the metal community apart. People have different ideas on how to make metal more accessible, while at the same time it shouldn't be holding back what is metal. I get music evolves.. however it's ending up evolving into something else entirely. Nu metal started that trend and despite metalhead elitists acting like cavemen "nu metal sucks, listen to real metal" and being a turn off I get where they're coming from. I started off with stuff like Metallica, Judas Priest, Fear Factory and Napalm Death. I was pretty much exposed to what metal is. I also got exposed to more of the modern stuff but I wished I had been exposed to more of the traditional styles. But in order to do so you had to actually look for it. And metalhead elitists did help after some time..

This has got to be one of the most 3/5 "They're okay" bands I've ever listened to. The hype had me thinking this was a metal band experimenting with what can be done with the genre, but it feels more like a pop band in metal dressing and going hard occasionally. When they go hard, they really go hard but oh my gosh everything else is such a slog for me. I tried Take Me Back to Eden and couldn't finish it, I dipped out halfway through The Apparition. I tried Sundowning afterward and honestly I stopped before the first song even ended

it's probably because djent and other "less mainstream" genres (and music as a whole tbh) are more accessible with the advent of streaming. the avg everyday ~non-internet~ person didn't dl torrents or explore music as much. it's a lot easier now that you have more free + more user-friendly ways for people get into music

Maybe they are not the "BEST" band in the world, but they do different things in their own way. They found a way to build their path into the music and many people like that way. I love their music because in a certain way for me their sound is fresh and different from the thousand repetitive shit that is out there.

I used to despise this band for some reason, but it's one step from love to hate and vice versa, so now I really love them. It's a great mix of genres. I listened to the piano and relaxed, and listened to the metal hard.
