Unpopular opinion: I like this album and it will always hold a special place in my heart. This was the album that got me into Slayer in 1998 and it opened the door for me to heavy, thrash and doom metal, and then black metal a couple years later.

Really is not that horrible as it is often painted. I would say that this is one of the better examples of thrash metal bands experimenting with other styles in the 90-s. They still sound legitimately pissed off here. Just less speed and more slower or mid-paced groovy stuff. Some of the best vocals from Araya here. My only issue with this album is that some songs are a bit messy composition wise. There are moments where it seems like transitions between separate parts of the songs were not thought out well enough.

Very underrated album. After saluting hardcore punk on the previous album, Slayer goes down a more experimental goth metal/industrial direction with very interesting, though a little hit or miss results. That said, the album's high points are really strong and the overall different attempts to expand their sonic palette is very admirable.

I would have agreed with everything here if not for "goth metal/industrial direction". It is everything but goth metal/industrial. Even if try really hard to convince myself that there is any element of these I still cannot hear them. Except for maybe some occasional distortion on vocals which isn't really enough to make anything industrial. It is more on a hardcorish/groovy side of things.

I actually really like this one. Maybe my favourite outside the first 5 and Haunting the Chapel?

I saw them on this tour and it was a life-changing gig for me. I also have always had a soft spot for this album; I don't think it's their best (or close to their best, even) but I enjoy it for what it is and for its aggression and heaviness. And to echo what Chrilu said, Paul Bostaph's drumming is really good here.

Played the shit out of this when it came out during the "Metal is Dead" years. Loved it then and still think it is solid now.

I loved this album when it first came out. I don't really know why so many people shit on it so much. Swan Song was another album that I could never fully understand why it copped so much shit.

Perversions Of Pain and Scrum are the best tracks on this album. It is good. I know it may be an unpopular opinion, but who cares!

I don't get the distaste many Slayer fans have for this record. I think it rules. Heavy, angry and chock full of badass riffs.

This album kicks ass! I don't care that they are playing slower or tuned their guitars lower, they were just bored of playing the same style all the time!

" He believed these characteristics were adopted in response to the then-burgeoning nu metal scene." explains why this album is Slayer's worst (relatively speaking). This could be considered their best by Nu Metal fans. I personally can't stand Nu Metal, so the only songs I like are Bitter Peace, Scrum, and Point. This is still the only Slayer album that has never grown on me after all these years. To each their own I guess.

I'll join those calling this one underrated. Saw them on the tour for this one and they were awesome and I've always liked the record a lot, too.

Why so many people hate this album? - It's actually written in the description of album, here it is: Slayer introduced characteristics to its music including tuned down guitars, murky chord structures, and churning beats. He believed these characteristics were adopted in response to the then-burgeoning nu metal scene. Haven't listened to this album yet myself, heard about this one when I watched Sam Dunn's Metal Evolutions episode of Nu-metal, where this Slayers album was mentioned, not much fan of a nu-metal, but gotta check this out, at least this may be something different from their regular full on thrash sound, which gets boring after third song.
