This song was originally written by Lee Mavers and recorded by his band, The La’s. It was a success in the UK and made the Top 50 Hit List in the US in 1990 but the band disappeared shortly after. Sixpence None The Richer’s version became a hit after showing up in multiple movies and television shows throughout the ‘90s and 2000’s.

Though some have speculated that this song was written about heroin use, that was never officially confirmed by any of The La’s bandmates in interviews about the song.

Considering that Sixpence None The Richer is a Christian rock/pop band, it really is hard to make a firm decision one way or the other – though they didn’t write the song, they still chose to perform it which says a lot about the lyrics and what the band thinks they mean.
