Inspired by Peter Gabriel, with whom they toured in the early 1980s, Simple Minds headlined a series of concerts throughout the US and Europe in 1988 with numerous other politically minded artists (including Gabriel) known as Freedomfest, designed to highlight the evils of apartheid in South Africa. The band wrote the song, "Mandela Day", referring to Nelson Mandela, specifically for this series of concerts. The track appeared on their album "Street Fighting Years" released in 1989. At this time, Mandela was imprisoned for his activities within the ANC movement, though he was released the following year.
