This effervescent slice of ‘80s-style synth-pop is the third single from English singer-songwriter and producer Shura’s debut album, Nothing Is Real. Appearing on Annie Mac’s BBC radio show, Shura shed some light on the track.

It’s about fancying someone and maybe having a kind of connection and then realizing that it’s probably not going to happen.

While the song is not a cover of the classic Busta Rhymes jam of the same name, Shura is a massive fan of Janet Jackson, who featured on that 1998 hit. Asked by Hunger to list her biggest influences, Shura had this to say:

“I just know this is gonna turn into an epic list. Can’t hold this girl back. The Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson was a game changer in terms of inspiration, but there’s a lot of early Madonna in me, I think.

Growing up on those records had a massive effect on me. I’m absolutely freaking out over Whitney’s ‘How Will I Know’ at the moment. Then there’s Patrice Rushen, Diana Ross, Tina, Raphael Saadiq, Dilla and early Prince.“

“What’s It Gonna Be?“ is about having a massive crush on someone, so it made sense to go back where to school, where it all began. But it was important for us to explore those archetypal characters – The Jock, The Nerd, The Dork, The Popular Kid – and then flip expectations. “What’s It Gonna Be?“ is based on my personal experience as a kid; thinking you’re in love but then realising that’s maybe just because you feel you should be (and ending up with someone totally unexpected).“
