Their musical accomplishments are even more impressive considering that none of them were/are full-time musicians.

Damn this band really passed me by. I remember downloading those 30 second MP3 samples from Room V, around 2005, off of CD Universe when I would look for albums to blind buy. I just never got around to getting anything and they left my mind till they came up on my last.fm recommendations. Anybody have a recommendation on where to start?

I think 'Carved in Stone' is a must listen for a start. It has one of bands brightest moments, including their most well known song, a masterpiece in prog metal universe - 'Crystalline Dream', then magnificent ballad 'Don't Ever Cry Just Remember', and in the manner of great prog tradition a long prog suite ‘Ghost Ship'.

Their first album is underrated, I mean, imagine being underrated album in probably the most underrated prog-metal band in history

Mike Baker = a crystalline, clear , sweet and powerful voice. He left behind a very big legacy. He is deeply missed.

A fantastic band, can't believe it took me so long to stumble upon them. All of their albums are brilliant, Mike Baker had such a phenomenal voice, it's very unfortunate and sad he died so young. Love the band pic where he has the Alice Cooper shirt! One of the best prog metal bands on the planet, for sure!

I couldn't get into it personally. It's no reflection of him as a vocalist, it's just hard to surpass or even come close to Mike's range. In my opinion, alongside Russell Allen, he's was one of the best Prog Metal vocalists ever.

That makes sense, especially cuz SG was always basically a studio band... i'm not familiar with any live/bootleg album w/ Baker... is there any?

Bit late to the show here but just found out about the passing of Mike Baker, whilst I was listening to Room V. Genuinely upset :( What a singer, what a band! [2] but he will live forever in these albums.

v They only have a few Power Metal elements in some songs (War For Sale, Deeper Than Life, Crystalline Dream) But the whole stucture and mentality of Shadow Gallery, is totally Symphonic Progressive Metal which obviously prevails. Maybe along, with a few Prog rock elements, especially in their Debut LP (1992), e.g. in the 17-min City of Ice or in their 34-min epic "First Light" from the album Legacy (2001).

v "every 2-3 years?" That's pretty close to the truth. 1992-2013, that's 21 years and 6 SG studio albums, which makes 3.5 years of waiting, on average. But, a creative stagnancy can happen to all bands after some point. In the 90's it was 3 years waiting, now it's close to 4 or 4+years break. But definitely worth the wait, because these guys, especially Gary, are prog perfectionists.

Even though this is not news (since late 2008), it's still hard to believe that Mike Baker will never sing again. [2]

@Grilljanne A new SG LP should definitely be on Carl and Gary's schedule, since they release every 3-4 years, on average.
