To talk extensively about classic Sepultura would be akin to carrying toucans back to Brazil. However, for the sake of introduction, it's sometimes convenient… unfortunately, this will turn into a far too long essay about why "Roots" is the rotten apple on the Sepultura tree. Back when thrash enthralled the metal scene, a few young men from Brazil initially attempted, more poorly than well, to replicate the sound of their heroes from North America and Europe and were ridiculed for it. But every band starts small, and Sepultura played albums like "Bestial Devastation" purely out of dedication and passion for hard music. However, their technical and compositional skills improved immensely with the addition of guitarist Andreas Kisser, and soon they belonged to the vanguard of a movement that was reaching its peak – only to be silenced by the end of the Cold War.

In which realms the lyricist (cough) and singer (ahem) Max Cavalera floated, only his weed dealer knows. And they are the ones who have the perfect remedy for this album and its target audience. Simple-minded stoners who have Insane Clown Posse, Pantera, and (hed)P.E. in their collection will light up a joint, take a deep puff, put on this record, and find no fault in it. Because either they vent their frustration by screaming profound and well-thought-out hooklines like "Straighthate! Straighthate! Straighthaaaaaaaaate," "When You Go Down Motherfucker!" or "Cut-throat! Cut-throat! Cut-throooaaaaaat!" or they're already drifting mentally into the aforementioned realms.

To delve into specific words about the individual pieces would be futile. The "songs" (and I use the word generously) are barely recognizable as such, and the instrumental pieces are quickly forgotten. The band played their instruments at best as amateurishly as on "Morbid Visions". Because back then, they just couldn't do any better. But they played out of love for music. On "Roots," you only hear the love for money. It's hard to believe that Andreas Kisser, who raised the band from garage level to the thrash Olympus, now contentedly plucks the felt 10 semitones lower-tuned low E-string only once every few beats. But greed can apparently do that to many artists. Make your music dumber, and the masses will eat out of your hand. "Roots" is unspeakably dumb. And the masses subsequently turned Sepultura into superstars, whose inflated egos ultimately destroyed the band. And in the face of this album, perhaps that's for the best. 0,5/10

If you want to sum up everything that went wrong with metal in a single record, this is it. What a fall from grace.

An album that the narrow-minded old-school Thrashers couldn't understand (and i'm saying this as a huge fan of Thrash Metal myself). Shame, they're really missing out. Well, their loss, not mine... :)

Read some idiot talking shit about this masterpiece on their page. And it's been written here in Portuguese (Sepultura's native language, btw): the only people who can't appreciate this work of art are either gringos or metalhead critics, who really don't understand bullshit about Brazil's culture or couldn't outgrow the typical mindset that imputs Heavy Metal is the only true genre and all the rest is shit. Well... guess all we can do for these people is feel sorry.

I wasn't expecting a person could get so mad about being called a "gringo". Well, I advise you'd get over this and learn how to spell imperialism before having the nerve of using the word "favela", a place a little b*tch like you wouldn't stand to thrive. Muito de nada, gringo forgado.

eh, as far as I know, people are just extremely upset that Sepultura really simplified their musical style for this and Chaos A.D. Has zilch to do with anything else.

some folks liked the more rollercoasterish, spidery song structures of Schizophrenia/Beyond the Remains/Arise as opposed to the Cavalera Bros. aping Helmet, Godflesh/early Pitchshifter & Biohazard with tribal elements slapped on for Chaos A.D./Roots. I used to abhor those albums, but now they're good IMO.

Not even close to the best track on the album for me, but fair enough, to each his own! This album was highly influential, however! Not that it automatically means good, tho i personally really like this one, but i'm just saying it's been a huge influence on many bands since, the tribal drumming etc!

I was told - by Necro the rapper no less - that Sepultura is a death metal band. What's this?

Not big on this album but I will say the bass tone on this album fucken ruels and the production is what metal production should be like not too clean still has a bit of a raw feel the way metal is supposed to be raw and have a muddy bass tone

This is pretty much their most mature and most important album. Sepultura feels the most natural and transcendental on this record. It also helped define the sound of nü metal, and in both it's conception and sound, Roots is pretty much perfect. My favorite from them.

Overhated by fat metalheads but still not as good as Arise or Beneath The Remains. The drumming is stellar tho

Good album. Liked that "ethnic stuff" in it, really interesting. Also, it was helpful during my schoolyears with that angst and other teenage things. So, in some sense it has feeling of nostalgia. Also, it is different from nu-metal albums, in a good way, I'd say.

In hindsight, this album (and Chaos A.D.) hasn't aged too well. The sounds of stellar musicians convinced to chase trends and do some bullshit pseudo soul searching at the demands of their corporate masters. ....still better than Linkin Park, Nickelback, 5FPD and Ill Nino, though.

lol @ "at the demands of their corporate masters"; while Roadrunner Records it's known for being VERY corporate in terms of telling a band how to sound, act, etc, Sepultura never had any commercial appeal not even with this album which is far from following a trend of that era, instead is an evolution of sound.

Hah nice recent reply. While Roots isn't my fave Sepultura album, I do think its better than what I gave it credit for earlier this year. I still prefer the thrash albums but Roots isn't too shabby in itself.

It never struck me that this was actually a nu metal album and that it sounds a lot like something Korn would record. Indeed it does, apart from the vocals (with some exceptions such as Dictatorshit for instance). After all nu metal is very groovy, it's not completely unrelated to groove metal. Also, it seems to me that Slipknot were heavily influenced by that sound. Here is the article https://www.decibelmagazine.com/2015/08/13/they-did-it-all-for-the-nookie-decibel-explores-the-rise-and-fall-of-nu-metal/

I first heard this album when I was in early school (thanks to the seller in the store who included the title track when I bought a some CD). But this was the last album of real sepultura. When I bought the next album (for me its was) "Nation", I first thought that someone had mixed up and recorded some other band on the disc that I bought.

Roots is a classic. It's defining for me as music fan. Nu-Metal wasn't a generally bad bad genre at all. It simply allowed more heavy music to become mainstream. Look it means you can listen to Lamb Of Good after listening to Ariana Grande and no one gives a shit. Roots is masterpiece! Also this stuff is great to wake up to.

You guys have to understand that Roots is not like the others Sepultura's albums, this ain't a trash/death metal album, this is the only Sepultura's nu-metal record, that shows how the band could be versitle. This is a Brazilian proud, not only because they're Brazilians, but cause they showed our native culture and music mixed with agressive rock. This is a great album for real, and every track prove this.
