Biography

  • Founded In

Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, United States

Secular Theme was a Kansas City, MO, based melodic rock band in the early-mid 90s. Their only released songs were contained on a split 7" with Boys Life in 1994, and the 'Kansas City Misery' CD compilation in 1995. Soon after parting ways, frontman Matt Pryor used the Secular Theme song title "Suburban Get Up Kids" to name his next band. Shortly after forming, however, the band decided to drop the first word, as there were less bands that started with the letter 'G,' giving them a better chance to get noticed in a record store. He later joked that the real decision was made because he had a string of bad experiences as a member of bands that started with the letter 'S' (prior to Secular Theme, he was a part of the short-lived band Secret Decoder Ring).
