Biography

Years ago, in the mountains of southwest Virginia, hard by the Tennessee line, a young boy began to dream a dream. He didn’t dream of money, and he didn’t dream of fame—Scott Barker dreamed about writing a song. He didn’t want to write just any song, but a great song, a song that people needed to hear, a song that might even change someone’s life. One day he took his dream out of those mountains, from Chilhowie to Charleston to California and all around the world. His debut record, This Is Me, is the story of that journey, a collection of marvelous songs that testify to the power of faith, and dreams that live on.

Recorded exclusively at Babblefish Studios in Franklin, Ohio, This Is Me contains twelve impressive songs that are destined to become as well-worn as they were hard-earned. They are woven from the cords of Scott’s life and experience—as a husband, son, father of two daughters, military officer, best friend, and performer. Scott’s music reflects the delicate balance between the demands of art and real life, and is influenced heavily by songwriters like Tom Russell, Guy Clark, and Bruce Robison. Scott writes sweet songs, story songs, funny songs, and hurting songs, but most of all he writes real songs. One listen to this excellent record reveals a compassionate writer seeking to reach out and touch others with the most human of gifts—that one that he carries in his own soul, the one that also carries him.

Now settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Scott is currently working on his next full length record, as well as a five-song EP of gospel music slated for release on Smiling Handshake Records. He continues to perform in venues across the United States. – Studio 238
