Boring lyrics, so this would make shitty poetry, but the music is good enough and the vocals are so powerful it's chilling. I haven't seen the movie since I was too young to care, but outside of the context of the film it's amazing. The end is the saddest, when the singer gets a reminder of what it was like when she was loved, before being abandoned again.

Randy Newman is incredible. Plus, I just really hate Sarah McLachlan's voice. She tries to make her voice the focal point, which is not what I'm looking for when I listen to a song. I want the SONG and the feeling behind it to be the focal point. When you make the voice the focal point, you end up trying to pump all sorts of fake emotion into the song, which cheapens it.

I invite you to watch Toy Story 2 again. As this song closes, look at the look Woody is giving her. This moment is quite deeper than your typical animated movie segment. This is the moment that makes this movie what it is. It is the moment you realize what the movie is about. Toy Story 2 is the greatest animated film ever made, and as "When She Loved Me" is softly presented by such a soft, sad voice, you can't help but identify a very human emotion in what actually is a cartoon. My daughter watches this movie almost every day, and when this song comes on, even as a man I have to stop what I am doing because I appreciate what the writers of this song, and the writers of this movie, have done. Even a toy recognizes there is no more precious walk of life than a little girl.
