“Chevy Van" was a hit single for American singer-songwriter Sammy Johns. Certified gold for selling 500,000 copies on May 5, 1975, the soft rock/easy listening tune captured part of the ethos of the 70s and has had a long retro following. It's frequently played by oldies stations. Johns wrote the tune, and Jay Senter produced it. Larry Knechtel, a key figure in the 70s group Bread, served as a session man.
The song's lyrics describe a passionate yet fleeting romance between the protagonist and a brown-skinned, sweet-faced girl who “climbed in and took control”. He leaves her at a small town tiny enough to "throw a rock from end to end" and bids her goodbye. The prominent use of acoustic guitar riffs and Johns' easy, breezy-sounding vocals creates a calm, warm atmosphere throughout the whole song.
