Might get backlash but, "Where Owls Know My Name" LP is the best record that this band has released and any music they have made after that LP comes nowhere close to that masterpiece. I really hope they take a different approach to making music in the long-run, the new music just ain't it.

yea nah you're right on there. where owls know my name is a one-in-a-decade level record for me. i'm also a huge fan of monarchy and to a lesser degree also seed of light is huge, but the work is just a big fucking whiff and everything they wrote after the work whiffs even harder for me.

I sort-of agree. Owls was a fantastic album from start to finish, but The Work has 'The Void...' on it, which may be their best track ever. It's also a solid album in its own right, just not as good as Owls. The tracks after Jake left (Hellbirds etc) are definitely missing his presence.

I honestly don't know about these two new songs we got after The Work. They just feel like all over the place for me, without anything to latch onto. Maybe I'm just misinterpreting things, but it looks like they are in this " we are tired of being pidgeonholed into being that (death metal) band with..(saxophone)" and go in a completely different direction.

It is absolute insanity to me that anything from The Work has more listens than the songs from Monarchy

I own all their albums, but nothing touches Where Owls Know My Name. That album is truly special, the kind of album that borders on musical perfection.

The Work is all over the place and have too many fillers. Owls had structure and a consisting quality that they couldnt replicate or evolve from in The Work. One fells like it was crafted to a clear vision, the other is a collection of songs, some better than others.

I'm curious to see how they sound now that Jake has departed the band. With Andy from Black Crown Initiate joining as a touring member, I suspect we're either getting James Dorton on vocals, OR someone else entirely who will keep RoN from becoming basically BCI Part 2. Not that I would mind either outcome, honestly.

more death metal the the last two albuns, with good moments but realy not as interesting IMO, for sure. but give them a try, still very worth it, specialy the second album.

considering how amazing all three parts of the seasons cycle were until winter/the work came, considering how hyped i was for the winter album, considering how much i love so many of the tracks from their first three albums and how well many of those fit the theme of the respective record... i really can' help but be incredibly sad by how much the work was not the winter album i wanted as the closer for this 4-part series. i thought of blisteringly cold riffs, of "soil & seed" like explorations of darkthrone riffing, i thought of a great lament to that world that this band so carefully crafted on the first three records. but alas. i'm not complaining, it's their music and their interpretation, it's just not really what i was hoping for personally. i really expected the winter installment to become my favourite record of all time. i really did.

The new album hasn't quite clicked for me yet. I like the second half, but I find the first half to be somewhat forgettable. I'll keep trying, but overall it's a letdown for me after the masterpiece that was Where Owls Know My Name.

The new album is one of the best releases from any group in recent years. I absolutely love it. I can understand why people dislike the softer, cleaner parts of the album but bands have to keep evolving their sound to stay fresh and interesting or they end up churning out unimaginative rubbish like Dream Theater. These guys are good enough musicians to pull of stylistic changes to a very high standard so I absolutely support their sound evolving. I like the contrast of heavy and more mellow songs in this album. I appreciate DBC and Maybe One Day equally.

felt a bit disappointed with the new album, it's not bad, but i expected way more out of them. Of course expectations were high af after the masterpiece that was WTOKMN, but even without any comparisons The Work felt bland. perhaps it grows with a couple more listens

The Work занятный безрамочный альбом, смелые эксперименты, а удачные или нет - на вкус и цвет, эдакий арт-митол.

Experimenting doesn't always cause good stuff. This is full of failed experiments and mediocre/forgettable songwriting.

sound is not plastic, but it has become softer, experiments turned out with interesting structures. My opinion does not pretend to be true, everything is subjective

wow, this album completely took me by surprise with the change in sound but i very much love it. i love how much clean singing there is and how soft overall the sound is. the bassist has a very nice clean voice. fantastic album

Oh boy, I fear some people will dislike this new direction. Sounds like a different band compared to the first two records.

these guys absolutely killed it live when i saw them. the drummer looks like a metalhead Aaron Rodgers (in a good way though)

Focus doesn't quite catch me as much as Clean has. I'm still excited, but Focus just feels like a rather stock-standard proggy piece for the most part. Let's see where this goes, I still expect The Work to be the Album of the Year, although I have to say that Wolves in the Throne Room really has set quite a bar in that regard, at least for me personally.

I have to say that the song didn't really grab me like it did with you, but I only gave it one listen which is rarely enough to 'get' such music. It's overall impressive how much these guys changed and progressed since TCSoL, though. Owls was already very proggy and it seems like they go even further this time.

i read your shout and it made me think, and i thought for a few days but the "whatever the winter album will be called" is by far the record i'd be most excited if it were announced today. can't wait what the band does with the winter theme. if it's anything like the darkthrone reference in soil & seed is, it's going to be crazy good. and after all, with a winter theme, black metal is an almost too obvious element to play with.

very impressive live performance. the cleans left a bit to be desired every now and then, and i generally thought the material from the first two albums was a bit more enjoyable live. that doesn't go to say that the material from where owls know my name didn't deliver, i am very happy that i was able to catch them play that album in full with a live saxophone. the dude with the sax really delivered and seemed to have a really, really good time. quite the experience overall.
