This Velvet Glove is the eleventh track from Red Hot Chili Peppers' seventh studio album, Californication (1999). It was played live for the first time in Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan on January 13th, 2000. The track was written by
Flea, Kiedis, Frusciante and Smith.
Although it wasn't played that much in the Californication Tour, the band started playing it regularly in 2007 during the Stadium Arcadium Tour along with Josh Klinghoffer on acoustic guitar.
In an interview to Juice Magazine, is was revealed that “This Velvet Glove" is a love song for Kiedis’ wife, which centres around the lines, “John says to live above hell / My will is well.” - "It sounds like a plain reference to an understanding that’s shared between friends who’ve beaten the same monkey off their backs. Kiedis says the quote is not so literal, but the John the song refers to is indeed Frusciante, and the lyric is an eavesdropped lift from one of his solo works in progress.”
