If you haven't heard the Song Exploder episode on Try Not to Breathe, you owe it to yourself to look it up. It gave me a whole new appreciation for this song

Ha. If last.fm (or audioscrobbler) had been around back in the day, I would say, "First scrobbled June 2000, ah yes, what a summer."

I'm completely with you. As I read what I wrote, it sounds totally obnoxious. My bad. I guess what I was trying to imply was that the album came out in, what, 1992? So we're all late to the game on this gem, some more than others.

Words cannot express how much I love this band. This is just one beautiful song off an amazing album. Oh the memories, I listened to this CD over and over. Never gets old.

REM hasn't been the same since Bill Berry and his eyebrow(s) left the reservation.

The lyrics are quite sad, but when I hear this song I feel like I want to run through forests, meadows, mountains, hills, valleys... It's so powerful.

MackSpane: agreed. michael's voice is so incredibly rich and evocative, especially on "out of time" and "automatic for the people."

This song is deeply entrenched in my personal list of "songs to draw the sadness out of you and MAKE you express it." Along with "Everybody Hurts" and <surprisingly since it was played to death> "Losing My Religion", R.E.M. is one of most prominent bands on that list. I think it's just something having to do with Michael Stipe's voice. He could sing just about any song and make it sound depressing. :-)

you can think of this song being either about suicide or about "being old and succuming to death".

i completely see the connection(possibly) between Blade Runner and the song. Especially the last few lines by the character Roy Batty. "I have seen things you cant imagine..." "all this will be lost like tears in rain" - hence he wishes it could be remembered by someone.
