still my most beloved album. monty got a raw deal is, while still being just the right amount of cryptic for an r.e.m. song, a fascinating and eloquent depiction of the power of human connection and how we grapple with the innate apathy of the uncaring nature of the universe, touching on the latter well enough and inspirationally enough that i've talked to my therapist about it lol -- and yet... not even a top half song from the album for me personally just b/c this is so stacked. so lovely, i'm sleepy enough that nothing i could say about it right now would really be as articulate as it deserves, but this album is great great great

found this album at goodwill a week or two ago. i listened to it mostly on my way to work/school, and thought it was pretty good. it wasn't until just now, listening to this record at midnight in a cold room, that i realized how marvelous it is. i'm only on Sweetness Follows and i'm on the verge of tears. never doing this album the injustice of listening to it whenever the sun is out ever again.

it's a nocturnal one for sure. "sweetness follows" is fantastic. one of my absolute favorite songs off this album, which is a high bar given that this is my favorite album of all time. "sweetness follows" is for sure one of the songs that's had the most substantial impression on some of my values and patterns of behavior

Perfect album. It's what kickstarted a meteoric ascent for R.E.M. up my charts from the mid-20s to my 4th most-played album of all time.

it's a weird album. some songs, like drive and man on the moon, are among my absolute favorites from them, but others, like everybody hurts, the sidewinder sleeps and nightswimming, i can't stand.

I don't know if it's weird or not but this was the particular album that made me think I didn't like R.E.M. Specifically the song and inescapable video for "Everybody Hurts" back in 1992-3.

Not only is this an amazing album, it seems to fit any occasion and mood. As if it were a chameleon, it adapts to my mood and compliments it perfectly, be it happiness, introspection, or sadness. And can you name an album with two closing songs as perfect as "Nightswimming" and "Find the River"? If you can please let me know.

The album that introduced REM to me. I keep thinking these are older guys than me, but when they made it they were thirty-somethings wrinting classic songs with the depth of a full life experience. These songs are a personal viewport into days of the 90's as a teen, feelings, moods, mental images come back. It was also the only cassette in our car my dad could accept listeinng to from our music. (The others must have been RATM, Nirvana and the likes)

Well I haven't listen to further albums but for me this one is really beautiful in it's entirety, I even feel ashamed for calling this band boring when I was just starting listening to their albums. Hopefully this album will stay one of my favourite overall for the rest of my life.
