Straight from the mouth of Quinn Scharber And The…’s very own Joe Kirschling…a take on what it’s like to be a band in a city that can either say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ in a heartbeat. A very fickle nest in which to drop your album into if you’re the sort of band who are the frail of heart.
Fortunately, this isn’t the case for the members of Milwaukee’s proprietors of a particularly engaging blend of garage, blues and power pop: Quinn Scharber (guitar, vocals), Thom Geibel (bass), Joe Kirschling (drums, percussion), Josh Gjellestad (percussion) are most certainly not frail of heart even though their music is very heart on sleeve. Kirschling points out “It takes a confident person to write songs that bare all and don’t hide behind bullshit.”
Bullshit is the last word that could ever be used to describe the band’s ideals or their sound which has influences written by Teenage Fanclub The Replacements, Big Star, Wilco and even the Jesus and Mary Chain – hardly anything that could be called the basis for a snub. Having honed their songwriting skills in Milwaukee bands such as The Nice Outfit, The Static Model and Menlo, The Quinn Scharber’s have brought these experiences to the practice space and used them to form a solid set of songs which is Being Nice Won’t Save Milwaukee. Stories about latest flames, drinking and giving life a fighting chance are all storied along by Scharber’s young Paul Westerberg vocals.
The only type of bullshit surrounding this album is the spirit of jest from the band that changes up its moniker on a whim, dubbing itself everything from “Quinn Scharber and The Insurgents” to “Quinn Scharber and the Grad School Rejects” to “Quinn Scharber and The Temple of Doom”. The band has also become known not just for their flippant name-changes, but their on-stage ‘tambourine orchestra’s’ and penchant for the occasional unusual costume, thus breaking themselves out of the typical entrapments of what is known in the music industry as a ‘cookie cutter’. Quinn Scharber And The…’s Being Nice Won’t Save Milwaukee is a stellar confection of effortlessly heartfelt pop. Won’t you try some?
