In a recent interview with BBC radio about the first Placebo single in 5 years, Brian Molko stated "Beautiful James" 's original title was ‘Bad Piano’. The track was written during a period of painful insomnia in 2019 said the frontman, "Melodies came to mind and that’s how ‘Beautiful James’ was created." When asked who "Beautiful James" was Molko responded with "I don’t know! Whoever you want!” and "Is he even a man? It will be up to us to see who our favourite James is!". "Beautiful James" is a synth-heavy, upbeat track by the two-piece and has been praised for rebelling against heteronormative relationships and embracing the bands openly queer identity.
