With a disturbing under-water shot music video, "36 Degrees" was released as the third single from Placebo’s debut album, peaking at number 80 on the UK Singles Charts. The track has gone through several different arrangements, most notable being the 2005 version which was released on the “Song To Say Goodbye” single and a similar performance of the song found on the "Meds : B sides" album. It also received a remake for their special 2015 MTV Unplugged performance, a similar rendition of all these arrangements officially making it onto their 20 year anniversary compilation album "A Place For Us To Dream".
"It’s called that because 36 degrees is close to body temperature. I guess it’s all body metaphors" Brian Molko explains in 1998. In the 'Once More With Feeling' DVD commentary, the band revealed they were held down with weights, and would only play their instruments for 30 second bursts, receiving oxygen from the tanks of professional divers.
