They got it up to 27 minutes some nights after. I think they were an American band they probably would have made it 30-35 minutes longer.

Might be their perfect song. Never subject to radio overexposure, played on the road during what is largely accepted as their glory days, and the performances of it by David in 2006, with him and Rick trading off one final time in that version in Gdańsk is now so emotional to look back on. Steven Wilson said as much that this is the perfect side-long epic, which of course is a loaded field with many contenders. But for me, it’s the height of that medium, executed with the conviction of their abilities, and their impatience with convention.

The segue to the squealing guitars is incredible. The band is playing up the coming terror as they fade out.

The similar tracks tell the story though I think I’d add Close to the Edge and Supper's Ready too. But to be on either side of Jim Morrison's psycho-sexual masterpiece or Robert Fripp bridging grit and beauty in 12 minutes with a bass line written by the drummer, is something surely special.

the creation of Earth’s Ocean, since this song is based on the ocean rather than space / the universe.

To me it sounds like exploring an underwater labyrinth, the sonic brilliance makes me feel like I'm plunging through the depths and encountering different creatures and areas, its awesome.

"Cloudless, every day you fall upon my waking eyes." This is yet another instance of Roger Waters referencing Syd Barrett. You see, Syd’s main method of looking was with his eyes

There are some fantastic live versions of this, but the ambience created in the original recording on the Meddle album is so evocative of what they could accomplish, at Abbey Road at the literal free hand EMI gave them to record there. It’s full circle in a sense as this song would be so shaped by playing it to audiences on the accelerated pace of touring they would start to get used to living on for pretty much all of the 70’s. But back to Meddle, and quite specifically what was achieved here, is inarguably the beginning of great things to come but by itself is such an achievement that I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say this is the finest thing just the four of them ever did.
