I think the 1978 recording of Knee Play 5 has a MUCH better performance of the text/lyrics, even though that release edits out a bunch of the lines. The 1993 version’s male voice sounds dorky and the timing/stress feels off. Also, for me the edits on the 1978 version pare the text down in a good way, removing chaff and strengthening the romantic core of the piece.

Maybe it's just because it's the first version I heard, but I love the 1993 recording. The voice in the 1978 version is that of the author of the text, Samuel M. Johnson, which is cool. But I prefer Jasper McGruder's 1993 delivery overall, as well as the full text (chaff notwithstanding). The 1978 recording leaves out the line, "Everything must have an ending except my love for you" -- which I think is a damn shame.
