“ Is it the chalice that you use for protection?” Can anyone explain this line? What is meant by “chalice”?

PH-- brought up Catholic and educated by the Jesuits-- is using the word, I think, in reference to 2 different but interrelated religious senses. The first is the "Chalice" used in the mass to drink wine that "transubstantiates" into the blood of Christ (as the wafer does into the flesh of Christ. The ritual bestows blessings and protections against evil to the believing Catholic. Related, and even more powerful is the medieval quest for the Holy Chalice or Holy Grail, thought to be the original vessel that was used at the Last Supper by Jesus Christ. This chalice, if found, was thought to possess miraculous healing and other powers (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Chalice ). The album, Silent Corner, on which the lyrics you are citing appear, shows Hammill clearly questioning the religion (esp. in The Lie where he rejects theological doctrines as "just another lie" in the closing line). Are our "houses/homes" modern icons we idealize as Christians did/do their sacred Chalices?

I just wished that his music appeared in Stranger Things or something. Like what happened to Metallica, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel. Yeah most of his songs are not something that would appear as soundtrack for some mainstream movie or series but I think he deserves so much more popularity due to the quality of his work that it actually makes me angry and sad. He should be one of the most praised singer-songwriters ever. I'll wait til people start mass-discovering his stuff or til his music is used in something big or til he is invited to a famous talk show or something.

It's a tough ask, Hammill's discography as a whole has very little mainstream appeal. Some songs could land pretty hard, though; something beautiful and simple like The Siren Song or Shell would be my first thought. There was a nice little moment on new year's eve last year when Sean Lennon tweeted about discovering Ferret and Featherbird and loving the whole album.

All albums from 73-77 are masterpieces. And everything else is well worth exploring too.

Just got my first Hammill album (a $6 used copy of 'The Future Now'). It reminds me a lot of Peter Gabriel's second album... I'm intrigued.
