This Fire is Paula Cole's second album. It was released in October of 1996 to great critical and commercial success. Cole wrote and produced the album herself, recording all tracks in approximately two weeks. The album peaked at #20 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. It has been certified double platinum in the United States.

Two singles from the album were given an official release. The first single was "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?," which peaked at #8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #15 on the UK Official charts. Follow-up single, "I Don't Want to Wait," peaked at #11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and due to its longevity on the charts it became the 10th biggest single of 1998. A third and final single, "Me," was given a promotional release. Additionally, the song "Feelin' Love," was featured on the original motion picture soundtrack to the movie City of Angels.

This Fire was nominated for seven awards at the 40th Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Album. "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" was also nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Finally, Cole was nominated for Producer of the Year and Best New Artist —winning the latter.
